What is ONDA?

ONDA is a medical device developed by DEKA (Florence, Italy) that uses Coolwaves — a proprietary microwave technology operating at 2.45 GHz — to selectively target fat cells and stimulate collagen remodeling in the skin. Unlike traditional radiofrequency devices that heat all tissue layers non-selectively, Coolwaves technology exploits a specific physical property: microwaves at this frequency are preferentially absorbed by tissues with high water-to-fat ratios, allowing selective heating of adipocytes while the overlying skin is protected by a built-in cooling system.

The physics behind Coolwaves

A 2024 consensus paper from the Onda Coolwaves International Advisory Board published in peer-reviewed literature documented the selective heating mechanism: microwave energy penetrates the skin surface (which is actively cooled) and is absorbed by the deeper fat layer, raising adipocyte temperature to 42-45°C. Coverage in the U.S. market for ONDA is therefore limited — the device we use at Delight Dermatology Clinic in Seoul is the same CE-certified system that is studied and used across Europe. For patients comparing options, this is an important distinction: ONDA is a European-origin device with European and Korean regulatory approvals, not a U.S. FDA-cleared device.
